This post will show you all of counters used in Japanese!






In Japanese, there are many counter and it seems like it's impossible for Japanese learners to memorize all of them. Even children in Japan take years to memorize and be able to use them properly as they grow up. So you don't have to rush. Just take your time and use them in many situations as you practice!

● 階 (かい/floor) 


なんかい/なんがい What floor

● 枚 (まい/Thin object)

This is used when you count think objects suck as paper, rugs, dishes, etc.

This is used when you count books.

● 本 (ほん/ぽん/object like sticks)

This is used when you count objects like sticks such as a pencil, chop sticks, etc.

This is used when you count vehicles, machines, devices such as cars, buses, smartphones, etc.

● 着 (ちゃく/Clothes)

This is used when you count clothes such as a t-shirt, kimono, etc.

● 個 (こ/small object)

This is used when you count small objects such as a candy, pin, goggles, etc.

● 匹 (ひき/Animals)

This is used when you count animals such as a cat, dog, etc.

● 皿 (さら/Plates)

This is used when you count plates.

● 杯 (はい/cups)

This is used when you count things like a cup, a glass, etc.

● つ (almost everything)

This is used when you count almost anything. It's appropriate to use right counter but if you're not sure which one to use, use this one.
